With the release of the NHL schedule comes the release of our favorite destinations catered around the rink. From expansion teams to Music City, there’s plenty to see at the front end of the season with these NHL weekend trips.

The center of Ohio isn’t exactly the sports capital, but if there ever was a weekend you might want to make a visit, this is it. The Blue Jackets finished fourth in the entire league last season after being stopped short in the playoffs to future champion Pittsburgh Penguins. They square off against the Winnipeg Jets in this early season matchup.

But prior to that, a blue blood college football game will take place at the historic Horseshoe. Penn State and Ohio State is a rivalry unlike any other. Penn State knocked off OSU during the season with thoughts of ousting them from the College Football Playoffs. Fortunately for the Buckeyes that never came to fruition, but they’ll certainly be seeking revenge this time around.

Event Date Time Venue
NHL: Winnipeg Jets @ Columbus Blue Jackets 10/27/2017 7:00 PM Nationwide Arena
NCAAF: Penn State @ Ohio State 10/28/2017 TBD Ohio Stadium

Enter the Vegas Golden Knights. The expansion team to the league and first major professional sports franchise in Las Vegas. They’ll hit the ice against the Stars for each teams opening match on a Friday night.

The very next day is a Big 12 conference game featuring the WVU Mountaineers against the Horned Frogs of TCU. Last but definitely not least is NFL Sunday with America’s team hosting the Green Bay Packers in Jerry World. The stadium is a spectacle like no other and is a must on any sports fanatics bucket list.

Event Date Time Venue
NHL: Vegas Golden Knights @ Dallas Stars 10/6/2017 7:30 PM American Airlines Center
NCAAF: West Virginia @ TCU 10/7/2017 TBD Amon G. Carter Stadium
NFL: Green Bay Packers @ Dallas Cowboys 10/8/2017 3:25 PM AT&T Stadium

Los Angeles

The home to the stars keeps getting more sports tenants. With the addition of the Chargers and Rams in the past season, it’s tough to find a bad weekend to check out Hollywood. Saturday starts off your trip with the USC Trojans at LA Memorial Coliseum, a former Olympic venue.

A double dose of hockey awaits with the option to see the Ducks play twice in a span of three days against the Flyers or the Flames at the Honda Center. And it wouldn’t be a weekend in LA without some newly revived NFL action. The (dismal) Rams will take their shot at Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.

Event Date Time Venue
NCAAF: Oregon State @ USC 10/7/2017 TBD Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
NHL: Philadelphia Flyers @ Anaheim Ducks 10/7/2017 7:00 PM Honda Center

NHL: Calgary Flames @ Anaheim Ducks 10/9/2017 7:00 PM Honda Center

Or as J.W. likes to put it, Smashville. Further into the NHL season the Western Conference Champion Nashville Predators hold two home games in a three day period. Smashed in between (get it?), the Titans go up against the Houston Texans with their new found QB Deshaun Watson. Try to go easy on Friday night on the streets of Broadway, you won’t want to be hungover in the loudest NHL venue there is.

Event Date Time Venue
NHL: Anaheim Ducks @ Nashville Predators 12/2/2017 7:00 PM Bridgestone Arena
NFL: Houston Texans @ Tennessee Titans 12/3/2017 12:00 PM Nissan Stadium
NHL: Boston Bruins @ Nashville Predators 12/4/2017 7:00 PM Bridgestone Arena

New York

Like LA, it’s tough to be bored in the Big Apple. So we narrowed it down to what we thought was the best use of your time by finding a slot with all three NHL teams in three days. That’s right, you can catch the Rangers, Devils and Islanders back to back to back on a few occasions this year. An NHL based vacation wouldn’t be complete without stopping in the city that boasts the current defending World Champions. The Pens are not to be missed over Thanksgiving weekend. Starting on a Friday with college football (in an NFL stadium) with the Pitt Panthers against the Miami Hurricanes.

More football awaits on Sunday back at Heinz Field this time with the big boys on the gridiron. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers meet Big Ben for a late season game likely with big implications. If you didn’t get enough action, there’s one more Pens game against the Flyers on Monday evening.
