With over half of the college football season complete the College Football Playoff is quickly nearing. Bowl projections have begun and that leads us to ranking some of the top destinations for bowl season!cfp

The past few years have exploded with the amount of games being played. In 2015 there were three teams with 5-7 records to fill vacant slots (though they got the last laugh).

Today Sports-Vacations has ranked the top destinations for this bowl season based on game significance and ancillary sporting events in town to make the most of your trip.

#5 Dallas (part 1) – Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl

Dallas is one of the fortunate cities that has multiple bowl bids. Aside from my favorite southern delicacy Zaxby’s being the title sponsor this bowl game; the matchup is held at the Cotton Bowl. Former home to the Cowboys and actual
zaxbysCotton Bowl Game. It is the current home to the Red River Rivalry.

Potential matchups for the Heart of Dallas Bowl include Maryland/Cincinnati vs Army/Louisiana Tech/Western Kentucky (Editor Update: North Texas v. Army).

What else is going on:

NFL Detroit @ Dallas Cowboys 12/26/2016 8:30 PM AT&T Stadium
CFB Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl 12/27/2016 12:00 PM Cotton Bowl Stadium
NBA Houston Rockets @ Dallas Mavericks 12/27/2016 8:30 PM American Airlines Center
NHL Colorado @ Dallas Stars 12/29/2016 8:30 PM American Airlines Center

#4 Miami – The Orange Bowl

Miami in December is a no brainer. Get yourself away from the cold and head on down to South Beach. Miami is so nice they have THREE bowl games. Did I mention how many bowl games there are? Ridiculous.

Potential matchups for the Orange Bowl include Louisville vs. Tennessee/Nebraska/Wisconsin (Editor Update: Michigan v. Florida State). Assuming the Cardinals get the nod, you’ll get to see Heisman hopeful Lamar Jackson who has been stellar to watch.

What else is going on:

NHL Montreal @ Florida Panthers 12/29/2016 7:30 PM BB&T Center
CFB Capital One Orange Bowl 12/30/2016 8:00 PM Sun Life Stadium
NCAAM North Carolina State Wolfpack @ Miami (FL) Hurricanes 12/31/2016 4:30 PM BankUnited Center
NFL New England @ Miami Dolphins 1/1/2017 1:00 PM New Miami Stadium
NBA Detroit Pistons @ Miami Heat 1/1/2017 6:00 PM American Airlines Arena

#3 Los Angeles – The Rose Bowl

Let’s face it, the Rose Bowl is (or was) on your bucket list. If it weren’t, you wouldn’t be on this website. Enriched in history and home to UCLA during the regular season, the Rose Bowl has seen college football games since 1923. It hosted the 1932 Olympics, BCS Title Games (remember those?!), and a bevy of Super Bowl games.

Potential matchups for the Rose Bowl include Michigan/Ohio State vs. Utah/Stanford/Washington State (Editor Update: USC v. Penn State). Ohio State hit a major speed bump with Penn State over the weekend. Michigan will play OSU later this year. All signs lead to the winner also winning the Big 10 Championship and head to the CFP playoff. It will be a toss up who comes from the Pac 12 with powerhouses Oregon and USC down in the dumps.

What else is going on:

NHL San Jose @ LA Kings 12/31/2016 10:30 PM Staples Center
NHL Philadelphia @ Anaheim Ducks 1/1/2017 8:00 PM Honda Center
NFL Arizona @ Los Angeles Rams 1/1/2017 4:25 PM Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
NBA Toronto Raptors @ Los Angeles Lakers 1/1/2017 9:30 PM Staples Center
CFB Rose Bowl Game 1/2/2017 5:00 PM Rose Bowl
NBA Phoenix Suns @ Los Angeles Clippers 1/2/2017 10:30 PM Staples Center
NBA Memphis Grizzlies @ Los Angeles Lakers 1/3/2017 10:30 PM Staples Center
NHL Detroit @ Anaheim Ducks 1/4/2017 10:30 PM Honda Center
NBA Memphis Grizzlies @ Los Angeles Clippers 1/4/2017 10:30 PM Staples Center
NHL Detroit @ LA Kings 1/5/2017 10:30 PM Staples Center
NCAAM Stanford Cardinal @ USC Trojans 1/5/2017 11:00 PM Galen Center

#2 Dallas (part 2) – The Cotton Bowl

The Cotton Bowl Game of late has good news and bad news. Since 2011, it ironically is no longer played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium. Good news is it switched to Jerry World. Also known as the greatest stadium in modern history. Jerry really outdid himself this time.

Potential participants for the Cotton Bowl include Boise State, Baylor and Wisconsin (Editor Update: Western Michigan v. Wisconsin). I’ll warn you now that if you make the trip to AT&T Stadium you might not actually watch the game on the field. You can spend an hour just taking it all in from the entrance, listening to a band on the concourse or most notably solely watching the game on the big screen above the field.

What else is going on:

NCAAM Kansas Jayhawks @ TCU Horned Frogs 12/30/2016 9:00 PM Ed & Rae Schollmaier Arena
NHL Florida @ Dallas Stars 12/31/2016 8:00 PM American Airlines Center
CFB Goodyear Cotton Bowl 1/2/2017 1:00 PM AT&T Stadium
NBA Washington Wizards @ Dallas Mavericks 1/3/2017 8:30 PM American Airlines Center
NCAAM Oklahoma Sooners @ TCU Horned Frogs 1/3/2017 9:00 PM Ed & Rae Schollmaier Arena
NHL Montreal @ Dallas Stars 1/4/2017 8:00 PM American Airlines Center
NBA Phoenix Suns @ Dallas Mavericks 1/5/2017 8:30 PM American Airlines Center

#1 Atlanta – The Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl

Hotlanta is the perfect destination for this bowl season. New Years Eve weekend includes some top tier sporting events. The Chick-Fil-A Bowl willchick-fil-a bowl be no exception. Either the #1 vs. #4 or the #2 vs. #3 will face off in the second year of the College Football Playoff Semi-Final.

Potential participants for the Peach Bowl include Alabama, Washington, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State (Editor Update: Alabama v. Washington). No matter who “IS IN” it will be a great matchup. Don’t worry about touring the Georgia Dome that day. Head straight to your seat. You can wander around the next day for the Falcons/Saints game.

What else is going on:

NBA Detroit Pistons @ Atlanta Hawks 12/30/2016 8:00 PM Philips Arena
